In Bangkok, the old saying “she has a face for radio” takes on an entirely different meaning. Here are 11 of the city’s hottest DJs, of both sexes.
Nana Rybena
Age: 30
Radio station: Virgin Hitz 95.5
Her story: Nana has been in the spotlight for 10 years. Originally one of Thailand’s sexiest auto racers, she stepped out of her car to become a DJ, sportcaster, MC and model.
Nana also owns a company, Car Lover Girls, which produces a reality TV show for women who are passionate about automobiles.
Sorry gents, she’s taken. This year Nana married rapper Way Thaitanium in a star-studded wedding at the Mandarin Oriental.
Michele Waagaard
Age: 30
Radio station: Wave 88
Her story:Michelle has only been in radio for a year and a half, but this stunning half-Norwegian half-Thai model’s career in the entertainment industry goes way back. She was a VJ on MTV Thailand and in Norway, following a stint in a successful all-girl Thai pop band.
We love Michelle because she tells it like it is, whether she’stweeting rants about Bangkok traffic or sharing her thoughts on the latest celebrity gossip. She's also an amateur chef and posts her recipes online at her cooking blog. (Try the eggs bennedict.)
Cris Horwang
Age: 30
Radio station: Fat 104.5
Her story: This former ballet dancer started her entertainment career modeling and appearing in music videos before becoming a DJ at FAT Radio, where she’s been for more than five years while also working as a dance instructor at an international high school.
The turning point of her career came when her second movie, "Bangkok Traffic Love Story," became a nation-wide blockbuster.
The inspirational muse of millions of Chinese-looking girls in Thailand, her sense of style is second-to-none, whether she’s glamming it up for the red carpet or and dressing down.
Ratchawin 'Koy' Wongwiriya
Age: 26
Radio station: Fat 104.5
Her story: Now famous for her acting career, Koy started out as a DJ at FAT Radio back when she was just a university student and teen model. According to the rumors, she’s now dating Thailand’s hottest rockstar, Toon Bodyslam.
First recognized for her pretty face, Koy has revealed a sexier side over the years by appearing on magazine covers and in films and on the runways. But what we really love is that she's not ashamed to tell the world that her nose is not real.
Carla Porter
Age: 22
Radio station: Met 107
Her story: This former teen model walked down the runways straight into the Thai entertainment world. Carla has been working in radio for more than four years and has starred in soap operas and music videos. She was the first runner-up in the Miss Thailand World 2009 pageant.
One of the secrets to her body-to-die-for is her love of sports. Carla plays volleyball, basketball, soccer and loves to swim.
Nawapon 'Kob' Taothong
Age: 30 something
Radio station: 94.5 Louktoong Inter
Her story: The only one on our list who isn't working for a pop music radio station, Kob started her radio career as a newscaster at A-Time Media before joining Virgin Hitz as a DJ. After five years, she moved to play Thai traditional-folk music at Louktoong Inter.
Her pretty voice has been heard for years but it wasn't until she appeared on a magazine cover in a bikini that the nation was awoken to her bombshell good looks. That brought both positive and negative feedback as many expect a DJ who plays traditional songs to be a bit more conservative.
Kan Kantathavorn
Age: 25
Radio station: 94 EFM
His story: A teen idol in his high school years, Kan later became one of Thailand's hottest heartthrobs with his babyface, prince-charming smile and hard as nails six-pack. Apart from his DJ work at EFM, Kan also acts in commercials, music videos and soap operas.
When he joined EFM we thought " oh, another hot hunk invited to DJ as a marketing ploy to draw more audiences." But it turns out that he’s quite witty and super hilarious, attracting thousands to tune in when he works the evening weekend shift.
And even though we’ve seen him more on TV these days, Kan assures us he won't stop DJing: “Though it doesn’t make a lot of money, this is what I love and I can’t stop doing it."
Chatchavalit 'Boss' Sirisap
Age: 31
Radio station: Get 102.5
His story: Before getting behind the microphone, Boss was a VJ at Channel V Thailand, an MC and a rugby player for the Thailand national team.
In addition to that strong body from his years on the field, this father of one is funny, smart and gentle.
He also has an event organizing company that he runs with his friends.
Thaweerith 'Pae' Chulasap
Age: 27
Radio station: 89 Chill FM
His story: A music graduate from London, Pae was an English tutor and a music instructor before joining 89 Chill FM. But he wasn't widely known until a TV commercial (he played an environmental activist) starring him and other two guys was launched earlier this year.
Selected as one of the Cleo 50 Most Eligible Bachelors of the Yearand voted "Most Innovative Guy" by Cleo Magazine, Pae is not a gadget geek but does admit they make his life easier.
Melissa Courtney
Age: 26
Radio station: Met 107
Her story: Before joining Met 107, this half-Thai-half-American studied nursing at Assumption University. Before that, when she was 18, she was also a contestant in the Miss Thailand World 2002 beauty contest.
Today she also works as a VJ for local cable television Pop Channel. Also known as DJ Mali (Thai for jasmine), instead of on magazine covers or runways we often see her at events or going places to shoot her TV programs.
When she’s not sitting behind a microphone, this self-professed donut lover loves to play with her furry cats and tweet back and forth with her friends and her fans.
Momay Buranasiri
Age: 31
Radio station: EZY FM 105.5
Her story: Born in a musically inclined family (her mom is a famous singer and her sister a voice trainer), Momay was also a popular singer back in her teen years. The former pop starlet and beauty queen is now a full-time DJ playing easy-listening songs, but she also MCs events and teaches dance.
Momay is one of those rare DJs who has managed to find a balance between her native and second language, able to flip between Thai and English with ease.
